Yes, and if this is a war, that national response is without question


necessary. After this crisis is over it will be time to reexamine our spending priorities at the national level for real. That means addressing our healthcare system holes, funding public health response capability, investing in infrastructure, deprioritizing some of our military expenditures, and addressing taxation and the longer term implications of the deficit. A pandemic recurrence, or climate catastrophe, or asteroid strike, multiple volcanic eruptions, aren't just the stuff of science fiction. They also are things we can prepare for. (There's an interesting TED talk I watched last night about 8 things that could end civilization. It's from 2013 and the first thing the speaker talked about was a pandemic. It's a little cursory and the speaker isn't a scientist and was not especially engaging, IMO, but the topic was interesting.)

I suspect this will be a key topic in the next election. It absolutely should be.
