It isn't just about cops. Police brutality is/was just the spark.
That's why I mentioned systemic racism. Police treatment of blacks (and other, as you mention; and yes I've seen that horrific video) is but a symptom of a much larger sickness in this country. From cops to district attorneys to judges to legislators to archaic views of race spread all over the country, it isn't a simple numbers game of blacks killed by police vs. people killed by COVID-19. We're talking a dozen generations of people given no chance to thrive or having that chance ripped away from them. Sure, it's gotten better over the years—certainly over the past half-century—but the true cost of all that terrible history can't be counted simply by method of death but also must take into consideration chance at what whites in America consider 'living.'
We won't ever understand how serious the black community is about what is happening now or how desperate it is for real change until we come to grips with the depth and breadth of their struggle.
