This is important IMO. Media bias is different from what it was during the days of Walter Cronkite and 3 networks using news as a loss leading public service. But it’s not all that different from what it has generally been through history. And it’s not nearly as biased as the myth that’s built up around it.

I don’t think anybody said that Romney would put blacks back in chains. I think Biden, as a combatant in that campaign, claimed in an interview that Romney’s hands off approach to Wall St would put the country back in chains. The media itself just quoted Biden, and never itself said anything about Romney putting anyone in chains.

War on Women is at least less of a complete reinvention of the past. The lefty media did oppose Romney’s views on abortion rights and contraception. I found references to Romney stating that he would defund Planned Parenthood’s cancer screening practice. The dem party declared that Romney was making war on women. I found an editorial from Nov of 2012 in the NYT that was clearly opposed to Romney’s policies, but actually called “war on women” hyperbole. To paraphrase, Kristoff, the editorialist, said “I’ve been to Afghanistan and seen real war on women, and this is not the same thing”.

My point is that the reality of media bias is not even in the same universe with the mythology about it. Given Trumpism’s profoundly unAmerican assaults on the freedom of press in the US, we should absolutely not play into that by reinventing past media positions.

The media never said that Romney wanted to put blacks in chains. And I didn’t see examples of them assaulting Romney’s character over his policies on women’s rights. They at times assaulted his positions. Which is a totally different thing.

Feel free to show me links proving me wrong, but if not, you are not accurately portraying the media here. You are only amplifying the myth.
