Cancelling is pretending they didn't exist
Speaking more of their history than is present in most history books is not cancelling.
Now it is absolutely possible that speaking a more complete history of an individual calls into question the placement of memorials in their honor. It is true that it is not always fair to judge historical figures based on the social norms of the present, but it is ALSO true that by unquestionably deifying those same historical figures, you are somewhat explicitly endorsing the social norms of their time.
