I think the whole statue thing is relatively stupid. A lot of noise about symbols rather than tackling the real problem.
The appropriate middle ground is (as is typically) education and communication. Leading the nation through a World War is a pretty noteworthy accomplishment, regardless of whatever other baggage WW has about his person. But the other baggage matters. The state of American society in the early 20th century is a fine educational point. The popularity of Birth Of A Nation, for example, and the idea that the POTUS would request a private screen in the White House is a pretty big deal. It's easy for white people to say "Well that was ago, and has nothing to do with anyone today. It's not important", but it totally ignores the fact that that from other perspectives that simply isn't true.
Edit: The tearing down of the symbols is as much about the refusal to address this past, as it is about the men memorialized by them. [Post edited by Beerman at 06/30/2020 2:06PM]
