I'm figuring out just how little he can do without putting his position at risk. This is a referendum on Trump's first term at this point, and he just keeps making things worse for himself. As we all know, Joe doesn't excel on the debate stage either (and theDonald would turn it into a circus if they kept the traditional format). These debates would not be a comparison of ideas (Donald doesn't have any) or platforms.

Joe needs to have a few new thoughts, but running as the anti-Donald (someone who will seek to unify, restore our reputation globally, bring integrity to the office, etc.) without being painted as a LWNJ is probably the way to play this one.

I read Friedman's piece yesterday and found it interesting. I think, at the very least, the Biden campaign will push for a change in format (which probably makes sense- the debates aren't very interesting these days). I can't imagine theDonald ever agreeing to his proposal, which would put Biden in a position of strength. Trump continuing to run away from the tax returns (like he has run away from Covid19) wouldn't look great and everyone knows he has a real problem telling the truth (hell, even his supporters know he's a lying sack of shit - you can't believe a thing the guys says, really).
