At the very least, it would serve to remind everyone that theDonald doesn't think he needs to play by the same rules everyone else does (even if those rule are unwritten) and that he doesn't do what he says he's going to (he said 4 years ago that he'd release them...).

At most, there are probably reasons to believe there is something untoward that would come out of a close examination. I can't say I understand exactly how people would make connections in a bullet-proof way though.

At the end of it, I think his tax returns would probably reveal that he is not the person he has millions of people believing he is - which may or may not be damaging. Perhaps that is the 'canard' element as reasonable people could debate relevance. But I do think that's why he is avoiding the revelation like the the plague (or Covid 19).
