By far, the interests of all America, our economy, and the Trump political fates were to open and normalize as quickly as possible. They understood this, and pushed to make it happen--perhaps too quickly, but that isn't my point here to argue.

What is equally clear were those same interests in maximizing social distancing, taking the lethality of Covid-19 seriously, and preaching masks like they were the long lost 3rd Corinthians.

Adopting masks as part of their bigger macho culture war has got to be the dumbest most self-destructive behavior in politics I have seen in my lifetime. The flaw of ego in Don's politics costing him politically is one thing, but that same flaw costing us 5 months of gain in the pandemic is quite another thing. You point is both valid and important.
