patients and gotten hit with an initial wave that resulted in 7x the number of deaths per capita as florida and left the population shellshocked and terrified, we'd have much better compliance with social distancing now.

Like I posted to Waxhoo on this subject yesterday... declaring NY a success because they have lower cases now and better compliance with social distancing would be like the "scared straight" program actually locking up and executing kids and then declaring it a success when the crime rate of kids who survived the program was so low. There's nothing like going through hell to find religion on something. New Yorkers went through hell and are understandably more compliant with social distancing regulations now. This is not the result of anything the government did or didn't do. Florida is now facing our spike in cases. And people in florida are now becoming more compliant with social distancing regulations. I expect we'll get through this too.

I don't even blame the NY gov't for their 7x death rate, but it's equally silly to tout what a good job they've done getting people to comply with social distancing when their compliance rate is mainly a function of the hell they went through.

And this doesn't even address the fact that the relatively high infection rate in NY (estimated as high as 25% in NYC) could also have a substantial effect on slowing the transmission now.
