Simpson-Bowles, Simpson-Bowles, Simpson-Bowles
It was just an outline and was not perfect -- nothing will be -- but I continue to think it was one if the biggest mistakes from the Obama administration to essentially trash the general idea. Agree with the sentiment that while it would take some political chips, it was then and maybe can still be now one of the best things we could do for this country. It was somewhat revealing regarding where the heart of the Democratic party may really lie on taxes.
You flatten and lower marginal rates in conjunction with eliminating most if not all deductions and implementing some potentially new "use" taxes. It would not be hard to structure such that you aren't sacrificing revenues or relying on dubious models -- but it does involve "change". Tinkering at the margins is just not the way, especially essentially just trying to tinker higher ---- avoidance is too easy and common. I also think we really have (sadly) crossed a point where many more folks will not think twice about leaving the country if there really is a sense that some Sanders-Warren type move is coming --- and it is not needed.
