In-person early voting is one thing, but you also have to take in consideration the round trip for mail-in ballots. Early voting in VA started 9/18. I didn't receive my mail-in ballot until 5 days later, yesterday 9/23. Assuming I complete and return it immediately, it's reasonable to assume it will take another 5 days to get there.

Then there's the possibility that I fucked up, say I failed to return it in the 2nd "secrecy envelope", my mail-in ballot is rejected, and like a helpful blue-haired lady at my usual in-person polling precinct, they automatically send me a second ballot with which to try again, as at least some states are wont to do. So there's another round trip for the "cure".

Some states are nearly as forgiving though. Take Oklahoma for example. Their early voting only begins the Thursday prior to election day. And in case you somehow think that's reasonable, early voting ends at 2 PM the Saturday before election day. So, what's that, a day and half window?
