IMO, there's really...

...no good solution to this problem. It's kind of like the old saying that democracy is the worst form of government except for all other forms of government. Our media absolutely sucks, but any alternative solution appears worse to me.

The Fairness Doctrine is problematic for two reasons, IMO. First -- and I'm generalizing here -- it basically assumes that all issues can be boiled down to two viewpoints, which is false and, therefore, unfair on its face. Second, it assumes that there is any body out there that could achieve some definition of "fairness" without that body's own biases affecting the definition itself. For example, I would never trust CNN or Jerry Nadler to define fairness in the same way that you may not trust Fox News or Jim Jordan to define fairness.

I think we're stuck with what we have, and the best thing for all of us is to encourage a free flow of information and opinion. Obviously, that means some lies and some idiocy get broadcast, but if the information can flow freely, then those lies and idiocy eventually have a chance to be exposed. Even if not, there's no way to have a "truth commission", so to speak, because we'd never be able to agree on what that even is.
