Here’s what you’re missing: masks and social distancing ARE reasonable

Measures that we can expect most people to follow 95%+ of the time (we are human and lapses happen, but this is the new normal and we can all adapt). OTOH, bans on outdoor dining, forced closure of businesses, “stay at home orders,” etc are NOT reasonable measures to fight an illness with a 99%+ survival rate. When the restrictions start to look unreasonable, it’s not a surprise they all get questioned.

Here’s a close to home example: UVA went through the trouble of putting up an opaque covering on the fence around Scott Stadium and fencing off the grass hill in front of the new dorms. Why? So nobody could sit (OUTSIDE!) and watch the football game from the grass outside the stadium!! How many people do you really think were going to do that? Maybe a dozen? Probably fewer ... When the restrictions start to look more like control measures and abuse of power than actual protection, it’s human nature to question them from top to bottom.
