Yes I think they are very much in touch. All politics is local to a large
degree. Which is my argument with your premise. Now certainly, on the Hill you can get wrapped up in the procedure and the heavy lobbying efforts and that can affect your ability to actually get much done in Congress that doesn't benefit people who already have power. We're seeing the downside of that with the cultural displacement and dissatisfaction people are facing, though everyone has different ways of dealing with that. But grievance gets nothing done.
Which is why Biden has an opportunity here that he'd better not screw up; he must pursue policies that do the greatest amount of good for the greatest number of people or the split is going to get worse. This is just my opinion, but while I applaud his appeal to unity the reality is that he's going to need to use the political power he has gotten in the House and Senate to bludgeon resistance from the GOP. It'll be hard in the Senate. But I want to see him beg, cajole and strongarm people to get his agenda through. LBJ-like if he has to.
