To me, the moment Rumsfeld told the press that we knew where the WMD's were stored even though we had a UN team on the ground, I knew they were lying. I just knew it. Going in was a Hail Mary that we'd find them. We did not know where they were, and a lot of "them" were only in Sadaam's fevered brain
Anyway, Iraq completely blew up the budget, and we never looked back. The early 2000's were the last best chance to practice any fiscal discipline. All the military operations were done "off budget," via supplemental summer spending bills that, of course, everyone member loaded with everything in the name of national security.
Oh, well.
