being able to vote. In Alabama, the local Democrats distanced themselves from McGovern and, after years of telling people to pull the straight-ticket lever, went out of their way to explain to voters how to vote for Nixon and still vote for down-ticket Democrats. At the county fairgrounds we had a McGovern booth separate from the Democrats. A couple of people asked me, "What does your daddy think about you supporting McGovern?" I was proud to say, "He's for him! Supported him over Humphrey in '68, too." The just shook their heads.

I think maybe I convinced one person, buddy of mine in high school who was a Nixon guy and who I used to debate all the time. He abruptly switched just a couple of weeks before the election. He couldn't vote either, of course. But small victories I guess. Nixon came to speak in Huntsville in '73 or '74 (can't recall) and the dude rolled out a huge "IMPEACH NIXON" sign while we all cheered. Whipper-snappers. ;)
