Well, I would not accuse the Hamases, Hezbollahs, and Irans of the

World of having the interests of those Palestinian families at heart. Their actions are also geared towards stoking conflict. They don’t want a settlement. They want Israel’s destruction.

I think Netanyahu wanted to highlight that. There are many in Israel who do want a settlement, although they disagree about so much that they have trouble forming governing coalitions. Netanyahu wanted to make that harder. Unfortunately, Palestinians who are more interested in getting through the day than destroying Israel also don’t seem to hold much sway over policy. Hamas has filled a void, and extremes in Israel and the Palestinian leadership conspire to keep moderation sidelined.

They may just have bitten off more than they can chew this time.
