The federal government failed to provide local government with guidance

Thousands of school districts across the country were making decisions based on little/no input from the federal government. I remember watching the Chesterfield meeting last summer and the members were all frustrated at the lack of guidance they were getting. They sided on safety of workers and did 100% virtual.

In January they reversed that and opened once it was clear teachers would be vaccinated.

But my biggest complaint in the fall was the lack of creativity. If we need to social distance, get to libraries or other government buildings not open. Divide up kids and teachers that wanted in person versus virtual. Have classes outside. Hire low wage helpers, not teachers, to support smaller class sizes.

There were ways to open more safely than Florida’s, fuck it, I’m sure it’ll be fine policy.

But there was zero creativity in trying to make it happen. That was frustrating in the fall. I find it tough to blame the local board who isn’t qualified in that area. That falls on the CDC and DOE for not providing local governments with the tools to make better decisions in the fall.

At this point, though, there should be enough data to have kids back in school.
