…the most defensible. In a race that close, there is effectively no winner, as even slight mistakes, etc., could have changed the result. I can completely understand how bitter Dems were after losing that one. Still, there was a legal count (and recount) and no allegation, much less proof, of illegality or fraud. So, Bush had to be declared the winner.

All the USSC did was rule that the Florida Supreme Court had acted unconstitutionally by allowing some Florida voters to be treated differently than others, which was obvious. They didn’t “install” Bush, they just put a stop to a bogus recount that plainly violated both election law and the Constitution.
