If it is true that a former president and his business did things like inflating the square footage of his NY triplex condo by a factor of 3 on loan applications and other official documents, as just one example of the allegations, and there were no legal ramifications for that, placing him squarely above the law, that would indeed make the US appear to be a banana republic.
