There has been and will always be a need for cheap labor. Turn of the 20th century farmers increased the size of their families, for the most part because needed labor.

My mother was 1 of 14 children. They were treated like slaves, made to work the tobacco fields of SC for little or no money. The only choice she had was to work or get the switch. School was secondary, only attended during the offseason. The only escape was marriage, hopefully to someone who wasn't a farmer.

Even today, immigrants are treated not much better than slaves. Long hours, hot fields, little pay. Someone's got to do it though, else we wouldn't have our salads or peaches in our ice cream.
