Professor Elzinga used the following analogy in class which has stuck with


me:

There is a crowded bus. There are two people boarding with hot cups of coffee. Person A boards and intentionally spills it on a passenger. She misses though and it barely gets on her. Person B boards and she accidentally trips. It gets on a customer.

I think most people would think that Person A is more morally blameworthy. There may be utilitarian reasons why this view is wrong, but I think most people would agree that Person A is worse.

I hope you can see the analogy.
