Lee's son, Rob, was attending UVa when the war broke out.


Pulling out my copy of The Wartime Papers of R.E. Lee, there's an interesting letter. In winter 1864, Fitzhugh Lee, his nephew and Confederate general, was camping with his unit near Charlottesville (they liked to spread out for winter camps for better forage). R.E. Lee wrote: "I think he had better move his camp farther from Charlottesville, and perhaps he will get more work and less play."
