I believe that depends on the person and the strain.

A good friend of mine got an infected blood transfusion at age 9. She's 55 now, has had two kids and two liver transplants. She went through a year of a hellish medication regimen (said she woke up every day with what felt like a the flu and a hangover, plus she lost a lot of her hair) to rid herself of Hep C. That was 5 years ago.

Another friend's aunt was a nurse who got a Hep C-positive patient's blood in her eye. She contracted the virus and died in under two years.
