Why does that matter? You want to pretend that political pragmatism doesn't
have something to do with it? It absolutely does, which is one reason I thought Franken should resign. Personally, I like the job he's done as a senator. But sure, we get another Democrat from Minnesota at least until next November. Then who knows what happens in that state; Franken's initial election was extremely close, so don't pretend the Democrats aren't taking a risk here.
However, the Democrats don't need this hanging around their necks in 2018 and Franken's resignation will provide a stark juxtaposition to the probably Roy Moore election. Not to mention the fact that people in Minnesota deserve a senator who can focus on the issues and not his ethics problems. Political no-brainer.
