Late 80's for me and that's a fair assessment. Not a particularly attractiv

city I would agree, but neither are many big cities IMO. But plenty of character and many diverse things to do. Not a "sterile" city for sure.

Thankfully I also listened to the locals advice not to go to Graceland because when folks visit, you'll just have to go again. Grateful my visitors never wanted to go past the wall outside. Also being from Tidewater area, when they complained about their horrible humidity, I could only laugh at them.

Germantown was indeed the swanky suburb with very nice McMansions. But about as far away from downtown and the character parts as you could get. You could have that in any town.
