Seattle area for a long time! ;) But generally, I like cities and don't necessarily find them unattractive. Seattle is remarkably beautiful for its setting as much as anything else. The traffic is horrendous, which is its most negative aspect. I suppose in Tennessee I prefer Knoxville, Chattanooga and even Nashville to Memphis.

Getting back to Richmond though, it has generally seemed like a pretty vital place with a vibrant and a little bit wacky downtown. That's a good thing. Sure it isn't as hip as Portland, but the south has some pretty cool cities that I think get overlooked.
