Let me jump in here

Federal law restricts firearm purchases once a person is "adjudicated as a mental defective or involuntarily committed to any mental health institution". I don't know about Florida but in Virginia this applies once a Judge or an administrative law judge enters a formal finding. It does NOT apply to individuals who are detained on a temporarily basis by the order of a mental health professional for an evaluation. It has been my experience that most people are released before the formal finding and therefore never deemed to be mentally defective. The person simply agrees to seek outpatient treatment, take medication or follow up with a mental health professional and the judge lets them go. I think there is a lot of misinformation about this process and I think most people would be shocked to know how many people there are that have serious mental health issues and have been involuntarily detained (sometimes multiple times) but still legally able to purchase and own a firearm.
