Interesting. I think the author sees it as an anti-gun post. He sees

access to the weapon as the problem because he might have used it to kill someone who he now sees as unworthy of death. But he ignores the fat that, gone another way, that weapon could have saved him if those kids gained entry to the house.

Depending on the state, had he shot through the door would not have been "murder" because he had a reasonable fear for his safety.
