Think about it like this.

None of us knows how we'd react. I mean, an experienced navy SEAL would, but most of us don't have that experience. How many live fire encounters had any of these cops had? Any? I believe we're always surprised by our reactions to sudden violent crises. Most of us on this board will never really have that experience. We'd either surprise ourselves with our own courage or cowardice. And it would probably say more about our frame of mind at the moment the crisis began than whether we're courageous or cowardly.

So if we indiscriminately arm ourselves, we'll get some random combination of the two, and there'd probably be equally tragic outcomes - armed guard in the fetal position while children blown away on the one hand, innocent children in the cross fire on the other.
