That's what I don't understand on this issue. No one seems to be asking

local and state law enforcement to go out and enforce immigration law, or even to ask anyone for their "papers" just for encountering them (e.g. when reporting a crime, domestic dispute, etc.). But when you've already arrested someone and have them in custody, particularly for a violent crime, is it really too much to ask that you see if that person is indeed wanted or illegal, and then calling ICE to come get them, and hold them until they do? It's not about enforcement, it's about cooperation between the levels.

I just don't see how this is anything but a losing issue for Dems as they stand now. But yes, I certainly never favored sending out the "jack booted thugs" and just rounding up folks that have done nothing beyond their initial crime of coming here illegally (and resulting crimes solely to survive such as working under a false SSN) when we've done zero about it for decades. I thought the Trump proposal was a great start (even though it didn't really address those already here beyond DACA eligible), and I still think it was foolish of the Dems not to jump on that. It seemed like a much better deal than I've ever seen the GOP even suggest, let alone put out there by a sitting POTUS.
