Yeah, and every company I've worked for refuses to

invest in Germany because the germans and the workers councils are a royal pain in the ass to deal with. It's f'ing impossible to get anything done in a reasonable amount of time in Germany. Fortunately the Germans are extremely productive and industrious so their economy still does fairly well despite their total inflexibility. And it's a large economy so of course we have a sales presence there, but we refuse to put any functions there that are not essential to sales in Germany. All of our sales support functions are located elsewhere in europe and we have no manufacturing or R&D presence in Germany. At my last company, we managed to shut down two R&D and manufacturing sites, and relocated the engineering function at one of them to FRANCE of all places, because even the french are less of a PITA to deal with than the germans.

And employee development and career ladders have been part of our economy for longer than that so I'm not sure what Elizabeth Warren's point is here. You don't think companies try to attract, retain, and develop the best employees?
