I think you overstate the degree to which corporate america is

depersonalized. For the very large companies, yes. I worked for two very large companies in my career (one with ~50K employees and one with 200K+ employees). I don't think the CEO of either company personally gave a shit about the employees other than wanting them to be engaged and happy because engaged, happy employees are more productive employees. I don't necessarily think they were bad people either, just the companies were too large for them to feel any sort of personal connection to the employees.

But most of my career has been with small to mid-sized companies (less than 10K employees). I've gotten to know 3 CEOs fairly well, and I can tell you they all care deeply about the employees of the company. I may have somewhat of a skewed sample because all 3 CEOs have/had been with the company for a long time and through a tremendous period of growth. So they grew up with the company and as a result the company (and its employees) was sort of "their baby" so to speak.

The real sharks are in private equity. They truly are heartless SOBs that don't give two shits about the employees of companies they own. I do think private equity serves a useful function, but in all my years of experience, it's the PE guys that come closest to fitting the widely held caricature of a heartless, profit/share price only driven corporate executive.

Keep in mind, that while the largest companies probably are depersonalized due to their size, the entire fortune 500 only employees ~15% of the US workforce.
