That point is valid. Still, I remember none other than Alan Greenspan on
his way out the Fed Chair door saying wealth (or income?) disparity is a serious long term threat to American capitalism.
I don't think we're near there, and one can make the argument you are making till one is blue in the face, but if enough Americans live in too much squalor, there will be a populist reaction. And I think this is what Greenspan was meaning in his concern.
