Exactly. Mitt considered going against that grain, but was obviously told

by advisers that it would cost him, so he caved, because he's Mitt. Trump was willing to take that risk (quite possibly, for the reasons you cite, to avoid embarrassment and a blow to his all important ego), yet won anyway (despite votes he lost for not doing so). No one else that cares or feigns "outrage" now that he didn't release them, was ever going to vote for him anyway.

Now, IMO, it's become a giant F You from him to the Resistance in fighting it - I won without doing so, so F you, I won't do it now. And I think it's mostly a waste of time and a losing effort for the Resistance. Those that were adamant he had to release them to be considered (a la Hoolstop), didn't vote for him then, and the vast majority wouldn't vote for him if he released them now. So why should he now? (from a strict political choice viewpoint)

But I have to point out it's not just about "potentially embarrassing" info in there. It's about having to hand your opponent a document you know will be twisted, cherry picked, and flat out lied about in their constant quest to "get you". Trump is well aware how that info will be portrayed by the Resistance and their associates in the "fake news". He won without doing so. Why on Earth would anyone expect him to just hand them the weapons to use against him now?
