Needless to say we have a very sharp disagreement on this point.

A working hypothesis? The most heavily potentially conflicted president, certainly since releasing tax returns became the norm a half century ago, if not ever, who hasn't divested himself of his business interests, and you think you need a "working hypothesis"? I'd say we have a very solid scientific theory on the order of the Theory of Gravity.

Yeah, I think your post characterizes well some of my greatest objections to the Trump Admin - namely, the normalization of bad stuff - let's just call it bad governance. Before Trump, this was never a question because we took for granted release of tax returns as minimum acceptable transparency. For presidents with far less in the way of clear potential conflicts of interest. In many areas of public trust, or really where any kind of trust is involved, transparency and avoidance of conflicts are requirements. The existence of conflicts, whether or not they are actually exploited, can itself be a violation of law or regulations.

Normalization of lying. Normalization of schoolyard bullying tactics in the face of any kind of criticism (today Trump's latest is he won't deal with the Brit Ambassador who unwittingly hurt his feelings). Normalization of bad governance. Working hypothesis? For Trump at least as much as any other president who released tax returns as a matter of normal course, it is the minimum requirement of transparency for the POTUS. Your question itself is a representation of normalization of poor governance.
