There was a lot going on in 2016. Some of the complacency came from
a conviction that the election was in the bag for the dems, combined with deep ambivalence towards Hill. Ambivalence should be less of a concern this time around, and Trump's last several days could be indicative of an all out charm offensive targeting his insular base, no matter how it looks to everyone else. That's worked for him so far, but that's no guarantee it always will.
If the AOC squad were smart, they would realize that they are doing battle with the wrong enemy. AOC shamelessly played the race card against Pelosi. Trump should be a unifying force to prevent that going forward. Either she and her squadmates are really just self absorbed young people who mostly want to scream self-righteously form the minority (there are many people like that IMO), or they really want to achieve change, beginning with the defeat of populist nationalism in the US.
They need alliances to do that. They need to take heed of what Biden was really talking about a few weeks ago and work with people in their own party with whom they disagree, but are truly responsible for the win in 2018, or they need to acknowledge that they are really just a bunch of blowhards in love with their own voices.
