Wasn’t that hard to see coming, IMHO. There’s been a growing disconnect

Between what the party line stands for and what the people who vote for them want/value for quite some time. Bush and Reagan won by pandering to low-information, military/law and order worshipping whites and evangelical Christians, not rich guys in Greenwich. Palin showed that shameless fear mongering really is the key to their hearts in 2008, and the whole tea bagger movement grew out of that.

IMHO, their voter base became self aware after Romney lost that these milquetoast business guys just aren’t the path forward. and they came out as a straight up white Christian nationalist party by choosing Trump as their nominee. Funny thing is, aside from being an actual demonstrable racist who despises libbruls, he’s a complete and utter fraud. Certainly not a man with any semblance of “Christian values”.....which shows you just how important his, well, “authenticity” in those other two regards are to what has become of the GOP base.
