I think it will be a little more complicated than that.

To accomplish that, a candidate would have to be honest about coal. It is not the future. Which would be viewed as an assault on a way of life to many in coal country. Kentucky, W. Va, Pa to an extent - Trump won in part by promising to bring back the past, including the glory days of coal.

In this day and age, that's a very difficult message to counter. Overall Trump's policies have had limited beneficial effect, if any. The trade gap is growing with declining exports combining with growing imports. But that's not putting a noticeable dent in Trump's support, which stays in the 43% to 46% pretty consistently. A populist message is about telling people what they they want to hear, not the truth. Trump is a died in the wool populist, and breaking the thrall it has on his devoted following will not be simple.
