Don't you think that's what the Va idea would do?
As I understand it Virginia's electors automatically go to the national popular vote winner.
Let's say the Bern wins the dem nomination. Let's say the general goes horribly for him. Too much scandal about his supposed support for the Sandinistas in the '80s; too much of his building of socialist street cred crashing into an economy that leaves the country feeling optimistic. Let's say the Bern squeezes out a narrow win in the ever bluing electorate of Va, but Trump actually wins the popular nationwide, because even Trump skeptics in most of the country are too afraid of socialism. Kinda like people voted for a not overly popular Bush in 2004, because they were afraid of terrorists rampaging in their imaginations, and they trust repubs on defense.
You think Va's electoral votes going to Trump counts Va's individual voter preferences? Virginia will have ceded it's vote to the rest of the country!
A person voting in Virginia has much, much more say than one in Wyoming, as it is now (in terms of how many electors Virginia collectively directs). The new rule as I understand it is the only one that could completely nullify an individual's vote. It would silence a voice of dissent in my example above.
