There is a populist wave of people who want simple answers to complex questions, plus they have a tendency to believe in conspiracy theories.

The ones on the right tend to be older whites who want to return to the good old days of white supremacy in all aspects of society. The enemy is the MSM and the deep state. There is a vast conspiracy against the old white guys. Simple conspiracy.

The ones on the left believe the conspiracy is evil corporate America and anyone who puts down Bernie. Simple conspiracy.

These conspiracies are supercharged with social media (including foreign actors who stoke the fires even more), a new phenomenon which we don't yet know how to process as a society. I think we need to go through one really bad cycle (which we are already in) before we handle it more maturely as a society.
