I think you are missing the context of 'too late' here.

What is 'too late' is preventing an explosion of cases in the US. That's hardly debatable based on, yes, conservative projections. 160 million is the LOWER end of projected cases, though it could be over 200 million. The numbers are going to remain low for a while because there aren't enough tests available.

Let's do the math here...
Let's put the number infected at the most convert number: 160M
Now say the final mortality rate is 0.9%, certainly on the low end of projections
That's 1.44 million. Dead.
