Probably are extreme nutjobs who think we should erase every person who owned slaves from history. The difference, as you note, is that those people are extremists and will never build a consensus around that view, whereas the issue around confederate monuments, etc. really should be a no-brainer. When you look into the history of these monuments and when, where, why and by whom they were erected it’s hard to see how anyone who isn’t a white supremacist would support keeping them in place. I say that as one who grew up seeing them and whose initial reaction was “WTF are these kids on about.... the RE Lee statue that’s been there my whole life”?
It’s such a leap to go from promoting lost cause mythology and making not-so-subtle statements that the Klan is still in charge to black citizens by ereacting monuments of traitors who fought against their fellow Americans to preserve slavery and our founding fathers who lived in a time when farmers owned slaves, but also founded our country, led our revolution, wrote our Declaration of Independence, etc.
