It is simple math at the level of a single variable. But when the variables
are combined, the effects can be non-intuitive. There are feedback loops (variables that through a series of other intermediate variables circle back and influence themselves). The interactions can't be easily understood without a model. The concept applies in social systems, healthcare, economics, and even physical systems (where you can get effects like harmonics in mechanical systems).
