a pretty profound reflection of the then-GOP voter base. And many were voting on things like "Christian values" and "traditional morals" (anti-gay, anti-women's lib, anti-abortion); or preached the "boot strap" narrative as if they were somehow net producers (which many if not most were not) more as an excuse to belittle and demonize minorities they associated with the Democrats and the "welfare state" they described more a means of providing for these so-called leeches out of "mah tax dollurs" (nevermind that all most of them paid was payroll taxes that won't begin to pay for the Medicare and SS they consume as seniors), etc.

So no, I think today's GOP is just a more direct version of the old one. It's been the white identity party for some time and Trump just stopped pretending it was something more noble.
