With Trump in '20, the Republican party has abandoned the educated
suburban voter. I'm guessing there is a good bit of buyers' remorse from 2016 at this point... The 'burbs are also increasingly diverse.
The suburban voter used to be the party's bread and butter (especially white suburban voters). Low taxes, fiscal conservatism, fair and open markets, security at home and abroad. The country club Republican (remember when lots of New Englanders voted R?).
The party doesn't seem to focus very much on these topics any longer, clearly has decided to pander to the Fox News segment of the increasingly shaky coalition. We will see an effort to focus on safety and security in the coming weeks - Fox is trying really hard to make that a more important story than Covid 19 (a real problem in itself). This time around, it is the CHOP, Portland and crime-invested big cities like NY and Chicago. I'm sure some MS13 messaging and a crisis at the border will work their way in soon.
But is it really surprising to anyone? I live in a pretty liberal suburb, but the people around me don't want to be associated with fat, Confederate flag waving snowflakes that feel they're being wronged. The don't think there were "good people on both sides" in Charlottesville. Maybe some will pull the lever at the polling station when nobody is looking - but you sure won't see many Trump signs in people's yards.
I think many actually care about social justice, I think many female voters in particular are worried about gun violence. I think, more than anything, they want their kids in school. They want leadership. I also think intelligent people are sick of politicians and media trying to scare them into voting one way or another. The Fox and Trump crazies will continue to be frightened and work themselves into a tizzy in the process.
Donald Trump isn't doing anything for these voters. In fact, he's making their lives more difficult.
