Teaching them is great but a major issue is finding places near
home that sell fresh, healthy food. For profit grocery stores have a hard time staying in business because the customers can’t always afford the products, theft and finding good dependable employees.
I think as part of the food stamp program, localities should set up subsidized stores with backing from state and federal agencies that sell fresh produce and meats at or near cost to help continue a healthy eating lifestyle. And food stamp recipients should be required to use a certain percentage of their benefits at those stores.
One last thing, recipients should also have to show an id when making a purchase to stop the more than nominal practice of selling their cards for cash.
