you have an entirely unscrupulous asshole who only sees things through the lens of how he can use something to his own personal advantage or to harm his "enemies" (who happened to be half our own country and political leadership in this instance) you get exactly what you expect.

This called for a moral leader who will lead by example and put petty differences aside. We got a partisan, tribal, clown who chose instead to govern like he's at war with half the country rather than the leader of all of it.
