I'm not sure I buy the first bullet. Outside of island nations

like Australia, Iceland and New Zealand, or authoritarian countries like China and Singapore, no one locked down their way to beating the virus. As discussed in another thread, getting people to voluntarily buy in to the seriousness of Covid and the need to socially distance, wear masks, and generally act responsibly is more effective.

Florida was one of the first states to open back up in the spring and fully open back up in the summer. My kids have been in school in person since August. And yet despite having the 5th highest average age in the US, the 8th highest population density in the US, and being a primary destination for people fleeing the northeast, Florida is in the bottom half of states for deaths per capita. Illinois and Michigan which had much stricter lockdown procedures are number 10 and number 13 for per capita deaths. So I don't buy that more lockdowns would have made us better.

Having a president that constantly stressed the seriousness of covid and the importance of everyone doing their part to help stop the spread WOULD have gone a long way. Instead we had a president that did everything he could to convince people it was no big deal and would magically disappear and mocked mask wearing. Plus he held super spreader events himself.

I think a little responsible leadership and consistent messaging from the President would have gone a long way. But I call BS on the assertion that we could have locked down our way to success. Name a non-island / non-authoritarian country that has done so.
