McConnell is in a fascinating and difficult position. He's almost the fulcrum for the political realignment taking place in this country, IMO. Ideologically speaking, he's very conservative, but, practically speaking, he's as swampy as they come. He's likely in his last term, so lack of reelection pressure is also a factor. How he ends up dealing with the current situation will be interesting to watch.

The Trump years have redpilled nearly everyone. Ninety percent-plus of McConnell's base (and his Senate colleagues' base) are convinced that 1) the election was stolen and 2) McConnell et al. don't give a crap because they despise Trump to begin with, and their sinecures are secure in any case.

The issue goes much deeper -- e.g., "failure theater" and Trump-hatred generally -- but the election was the coup de grace that crystallized everything. It's questionable whether the base would support these Reps any longer even now, but following an affirmative impeachment vote, the chances would be nil. (Liz Cheney couldn't get elected dogcatcher in Wyoming right now.)

In Trump, they've got a tiger by the tail, and no good plan for what to do next. How do you get rid of Trump without losing Trump supporters...
